CEMO doubles the group of PhD students

On 1 November four new PhD students started to work at Centre for Educational Measurement (CEMO). That increased the group by 100 %.

It is Saskia van Laar, Henrik G. Ræder, Kristina S. Støren and Haakon T. Taugstad who are now joining the CEMO team. The four PhD students will work on the following three research projects:

CEMO's in-house project

Kristina Støren and Henrik Ræder from Norway are both attached to our in-house project «Research on assessment in the Norwegian context». They take on the challenge of studying how complex traits, such as motivation and achievement, may be modelled, measured and interpreted. Kristina will look into the measurement of motivational traits and how these relate to achievement over time. Henrik’s study will among other things, give new insight into how and to what degree, the broad concept of mathematics ability develops from primary into secondary education.

Shall enhance examinations for the medical training program

Haakon T. Haugstad from Norway will work within the joint project of the Faculty of Medicine and the Centre for Educational Measurement at the University of Oslo (CEMO). This project focuses on the examination and grading system in the undergraduate medical training program. The project’s main objective is to foster and enhance existing examination and testing practice and to, ultimately, offer measurement approaches also applicable to other fields in higher education.

How to track longitudinal differentiation patterns

Saskia van Laar starts within the RCN-funded FRI-PRO project "Latent Variable Mixture models to track Longitudinal Differentiation Patterns".  The project deals with the statistical modelling of data arising from repeated measurements using the same assessment instrument. Focus will be on methods to verify principled measurement conditions required for fair comparisons across time, and how to handle response shifts.

First the PhD students will spend the next three months creating a project description together with their supervisor. Then they will start on the research they are going to spend the next three to fours years on.
