Organization of research groups

The faculty research groups were established in 2006 through an application driven process in which individual scientists joined professional forces across institutional boundaries. An external evaluation of the research groups was conducted in autumn 2009. The current designation of research groups emerged as a result of this evaluation and the faculty’s overall academic priorities.

Designation of research groups as of 01.01.2010

Level Designation Description

1 Outstanding research group Outstanding quality and publication rate. Outstanding potential for top level international research.
2 Intensive research group High quality and publication rate. Future potential for top level international research.
3 Research group A sound research environment with clear research and development plans

Brief summary of faculty research groups

Research organization and research management has been a priority area in the Faculty strategy work for a long time. The Faculty Strategic Plan 2005-2009 expressed a strong desire to improve the quality and quantity of research, and spurred the establishment of faculty research groups in 2006. In the following years, this effort was pursued as part of the continuous process of academic priority making, and finally in the Faculty Strategic Plan 2010-2020.

The purpose of the faculty research groups is to enhance the quality and scope of research within the framework of the Faculty's academic priorities and strategic plan by:

• Generate platforms for strenghtened publishing
• Generate platforms for external research funding and external research collaboration
• Strenghten research collaboration within the Faculty
• Facilitate systematic research management
• Generate attractive and fertile environments for recruitment of master students, doctoral candidates post-docs and senior researchers.

For more information - see the Faculty's guidelines for faculty research groups (pdf). Our experience to date is that the organization of faculty research groups have contributed to improved collaboration between scientists across disciplinary and institutional boundaries.

Current faculty research groups and their designations are:

Outstanding research groups (level 1)

Intensive research groups (level 2)

Research groups representing a sound research environment (level 3)

In addition to these faculty research groups, each institutional unit has their own locally organized research groups within relevant fields. For further information about these local groups, see the website of each individual unit.
