Dr.philos degree

The degree of dr.philos. (doctor philosophiae) may be conferred on graduates who have qualified for the doctoral degree on their own, without formal research training. You write the dissertation on your own, and have no connection with the university until the relevant faculty has approved your application for admission to the dr.philos. examination.
 

Who can apply to the Dr.philos. ecamination

The Regulation states that anyone who has obtained a higher degree examination may apply for admission to the dr.philos. examination. Applicants who can prove equivalent qualifications in a discipline may be given opportunity to apply for admission to the doctoral degree examination. This decision is taken by the Faculty.

A person who is not a Norwegian citizen, nor a citizen of any of the Nordic countries, may apply for admission to the dr.philos. examination only if the relevant Faculty recommends the application and the relevant academic community approves. Admission is preferentially given if the dissertation

• treats topics or make use of material directly related to Norway
• is closely related to Norwegian research within the discipline
• has been carried out at a Norwegian university or research institute, or in close contact with Norwegian researchers, or if the applicant
• has residence permit in Norway
   

The Dr.philos. examination

The degree is awarded on the basis of:

• a recognised scientific dissertation
• two approved trial lectures, one on a chosen topic and one on a prescribed topic
• a satisfactory defence of the dissertation in a public disputation
   

As all preparations for this degree is done independently, the University does not offer financial or other support in the process.
