Academic Interests

Karen 's research interests relates to the professions, epistemic communities and, more generally, the ways in which the organisation of knowledge impacts learning and identity formation.

Current activities

Member of the Horizons Research Team. Horizons (Horizontal Governance and Learning Dynamics in Higher Education) is a newly established project that investigates change dynamics in higher education in the intersection between policies and and epistemic cultures. Among its activities are analyses of students' learning and enrolment in knowledge cultures in selected profession-oriented programs. The project is funded by the Research Council of Norway, and led by Peter Maassen and Monika Nerland.

Completed projects

  • Professional Learning in a Changing Society (ProLEARN, 2004-2008). Project leader. This project was a comparative study of learning in the transition from education to work among nurses, teachers, accountants and computer engineers. Financed by the Research Council of Norway.
  • Learning Trajectories in Knowledge Economies (LiKE, 2008-2011). Joint leadership with Monika Nerland. The project was a follow up study to the ProLEARN project and special attention was given to the role of artefacts in linking practices of workplace learning with wider knowledge frontiers. Financed by the Research Council of Norway.
  • Professional Education and Learning in Knowledge-Intensive Societies: National Contexts and Transnational Knowledge Cultures. Exploratory workshop funded by the European Science Foundation (ESF).

Other completed projects include; Student Identity and Civic Moral (1999- 2000). Sponsored by Innsatsområdet for Etikk and The Moral Motivation of Health Care Personell (2002- 2004). Financed by the Research Council of Norway.
