Ongoing research projects

Initiater and project leader of a new research program: ”Words make a difference” and simultaneously introducing the Language Environment Analysis (LENA)-method in Sweden (www.lenafoundation.org). The research program has a local, national and international approach. Research group: CIS/STELLA, Karolinska University Hospital, Pisa University, EAR Foundation/Nottingham and hearing habilitation team members from Värmland and Dalarna. Transparency group: Ottawa University, University of London, university of Copenhagen and Barnplantorna (parent organization).

The program includes 4 studies with the following aims:

  1. To explore the listening and language environment measured with LENA in Swedish dyads of   typically developed children with NH aged 0-48 months and their caregivers by conducting a validation-study.
  2. To explore the listening and language development measured with LENA in a group of Swedish children with HI and in comparison to normal-hearing children who are matched for age-, gender-, language- and SES background and in relation to vocabulary development.
  3. To develop a new and very early parent-directed intervention option for families with children who are HI and examine the effects in child development and parent empowerment and level of stress.
  4. To compare the language environment of children with hearing impairment, when using remote microphones (RM’s) compared to when not using RM’s.

Other ongoing research projects:

Longitudinal study of reading in children with CI

  • Frontal lobe functioning in children with congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV) infection and in comparison with children deafened due to cx26
  • Outcome in children with malformed cochlea
  • Children with cCMV infection – a twin study
  • Babbling in children with CI and hearing aids (HA)
  • Impact of early (and bilateral) implantation
  • Lateralization in children with CI or HA in comparison to children with NHImproved planning skills in children and adolescents with developmental disabilities – an intervention study

National and international collaboration and network:

Research coordinator at the STELLA Hearing Science Team, Karolinska Institutet (junior and senior researchers at Hearing Implant Section, Karolinska University Hospital) with close cooperation with Pisa University. I’m part of FAS (Swedish national network group for researchers (seniors and PhD-students) who study children with CI and I’m also alumni at Linneaus HEAD centre/graduate school. I have a close collaboration and network with other researchers at Karolinska Institutet, Linköping University, Copenhagen University, Ear Foundation, Ottawa University, Boulder University, Sorbonne University and Stella Maris Research Centre in Pisa.
