Children with Cochlear Implants - Part 1

Language Development in Deaf Children Receiving Bilaterally Cochlear Implants (CI) within the First 18 Months of Life.

About the project

A number of studies have demonstrated improved auditory speech perception and speech production ability in prelingually deaf children after cochlear implantation (e.g. Geers & Brenner 2003, Cheng et. al. 1999, Wie 2007). However, there is still a lack of knowledge regarding the optimal age of implantation and the amount of language exposure necessary to achieve a normal function in the auditory system as well as a normal spoken-language development. The study includes all children (N=26) receiving CI within the age of 18 months, with no additional handicap implanted at Rikshospitalet University Hospital (RH) in the years 2003-2007. The study is done in close collaboration with RH. Responsible for this study is professor Ona Bø Wie and PhD student Kjersti Roland.
