Academic Interest
My research interest is talk and communication and the use of computer-based tools in learning.
Theoretically, my work is based on the premise that in order to understand learning we need to investigate how humans interact and make use of different kinds of cultural tools in different kinds of settings. This postulation about the socially constituted human is not meant to exclude the biological human. Rather, it emphasises the importance of congruence between the object that is studied and the activity that is actually investigated.
One of the core questions in my research concerns the ways in which computer-based tools can support pupils’ learning. Several studies have reported that specific features of computer software do in fact impact pupils talk and activities in a manner that support their learning. At the same time, it is widely reported that there are individual differences in the ability of pupils to take advantage of computer tools because the complexity becomes too great for some. This indicates that some pupils are more able to profit from participation in computer-based learning environments while others experience major problems in their efforts/attempts to orient themselves in such environments.
Competence is increasingly related to how pupils and students manage collaboration and how they take on complex or ill-defined problems. This view of competence challenges the more individualistic orientation that characterised the educational institutional tradition during the 20th century. Consequently, we see a need for developing computer tools that address collective, mediated knowledge advancement in school. My work centers around these challenges and issues, see publications and video productions for more information.
