18 nationalities make history

A large international community lays the foundation of the new master program Assessment and Evaluation. On Thursday 16 August the program got kicked off.

Since 2016 the Centre for Educational Measurement (CEMO) has been planning a new master program. The leader of the program, Johan Braeken, could finally welcome 25 students as the first cohort. A proud Vice Dean for Studies Jon Magne Vestøl announced during the opening that the Faculty of Educational Sciences is happy to be able to offer such a Master program:

— The program Assessment and Evaluation will provide students with a skill which combines technical and analytical insight into evaluation systems with an understanding of communicating these. Such competence will be an important resource in a society and work life with an increasing need for quality assured knowledge.

Varied background

The students have different study and work backgrounds, and several of them have been employees for a long time before now seeking more knowledge. Among the most common study directions the students have chosen before, are psychology, economics and pedagogics. The experience from a number of positions within data analysis, program evaluation, the test industry or the school system lays the foundation for academic discussions with different perspectives.

As many as 18 countries are represented among the about 25 students. These are Norway, Tanzania, Canada, The Netherlands, USA, China, Bangladesh, South Korea, Pakistan, Russian Federation, Kirgizstan, Australia, India, Ghana, France, Indonesia, Greece and Nepal.

Controversial topic

Testing is common in many sectors, and both psychological tests, tests in school and in the business life are easy to find. Johan Braeken explained that this not necessarily means that all of them have quality:

— Many tests are controversial, and don’t necessarily represent best practice

In the Master program Assessment and Evaluation the students will get a basis to check and validate tests and evaluations which are evidence-based and have good research foundation. That’s why the program has topics which shall make the students into good researchers.

New start for CEMO

Deputy Director at CEMO, Rolf Vegar Olsen, declared that the start-up of the new program also changes CEMO as an institution:

— The Master program makes CEMO turn into a new institution. Until now we have focused on research solely, but from now on we also are going to educate students. This will demand a lot from a small center, but we are ready to take on the task, he explained.

The center will use large parts of its staff for teaching and seminar support. Professor Johan Braeken, Associate Professor Bjørn Andersson and Professor Rolf Vegar Olsen will be responsible for one course each during the first semester. After that the students will have enough to do for the next two years.
