Title: Enhancing academic resilience in the classroom: a cross-cultural comparison of Scandinavian and Asian countries

Abstract: This paper’s main aim was to examine the effects of teaching and teaching-related factors on academic resilience. Since factors that promote disadvantaged students’ achievement may also enhance their non-disadvantaged peers, this paper compared their results in both groups. Data from three East Asian education systems (Hong Kong, South Korea, Singapore) and three Scandinavian countries (Denmark, Norway, Sweden) participating in the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) conducted in 2015 and 2019, focusing on Grade 4 mathematics, was analyzed. Two-level random intercept logistic regression was applied to examine the influence of teaching and teaching-related factors. A two-level random slope logistic regression was conducted to explore the moderating effects of the classroom-level factors on the regression of student SES on academic resilience.
