Brown Bag Seminar: Wangqiong Ye
Title: School and classroom characteristics associated with the trends of academic resilience in Norway and Sweden
Abstract: This paper will examine the presence of academic resilience in Norway and Sweden across time, and explore school and classroom characteristics associated with these trends. Based on the quasi-longitudinal design of TIMSS, this paper will firstly explore the trend of academic resilience in Norway and Sweden separately. The first longitudinal analysis includes 2011 Grade 4 and 2015 Grade 8 students, and the second longitudinal analysis includes 2015 Grade 4 and 2019 Grade 8 students. The preliminary investigation found different patterns in Norway and Sweden. The presence of academic resilient students decreased in both longitudinal analyses in Sweden, which may indicate some degree of deterioration in its ability in helping disadvantaged students or degradation in educational equity. Factors like school climate, resources, teacher characteristics, instructional quality were examined with these trends.
