Brown Bag Seminar: Chia-Wen Chen

Title: Exploring the relationship among performance, time on task, and actions of Scandinavian students on PISA 2012 mathematic tasks

Abstract: In this study we utilized response times and students' actions from log file data to investigate the relationships among mathematics performance, time intensity, and the explaining actions underlying the responses for students in Norway, Sweden, and Denmark, and evaluated measurement invariance between the three countries. We applied a three-factor CFA model to three computer-based interactive tasks in the mathematical content categories 'quantity' and 'change and relationships' in PISA 2012. We estimated multigroup models to examine measurement invariance and used latent regression to investigate how non-cognitive variables (e.g. Attitude toward schools, available resources, and opportunity to learning mathematics) correlated with mathematics performance, time intensity, and frequency of interaction.
