Brown Bag Seminar: José Manuel Arencibia Aleman, CEMO

Title: Consequences of better exams in Mathematics: hypotheses, data, and a potential research design

Abstract: At the request of the Norwegian Directorate for Education and Training, worried about relatively low and worsening exam results in Mathematics, the Norwegian Centre for Mathematics Education conducted an analysis of the content, difficulty, structure, language, and context of mathematics exams between 2009 and 2014. The authors identified language clarity and the high but varying high interrelation between exercises as potential explanatory causes of the results observed amongst year-10 students. Accordingly, since 2016, year-10 mathematics exams have used clearer language and have more exercises that are independent of each other. Has this influenced students’ later educational outcomes? The main purpose of the seminar is to discuss the feasibility of such a study. Hypotheses, data at hand, and a potential research design will be presented.
