Abstract

Peer mentoring between professionals is based on the idea that professional employees at the same level collaborate by giving each other feedback without support from an external supervisor or mentor. In professional development in higher education, this kind of peer mentoring is applied to address and handle challenges emerging in everyday work situations. A typical way of implementing this kind of collegial supervision is to apply a framework for structuring the conversations, which clearly distinguishes this kind of supervision from everyday talk. But the way this kind of structured conversation has been applied previously in Norwegian higher education is mainly based on experience, with little empirically based systematic analysis and documentation. In this article, we particularly focus on peer supervision between professionals in large groups (five to seven people) and how conversations in this kind of group constellation can be handled. Empirically, the paper is based on two cases of peer mentoring with faculty staff in a university context. The study’s data are based on material from participants’ written logs and video-recorded conversations from peer mentoring groups, as well as meta-conversations with participants reflecting on their experiences from the peer-mentoring processes in the two cases. Our approach to this material is, first of all, exploratory in the sense that we analyse the participants’ reflections on the structuring of the conversations in the peer mentoring through the applied framework. Secondly, from a longitudinal perspective we look at what significance this conversation structure holds with respect to how the supervision unfolds and how helpful the participants experience this conversation structuring.
