About the project
In the Teaching for Equity project, we investigate how and to what extent teacher education programs in Norway prepare student teachers to teach in an increasingly diverse society, where pupils’ backgrounds are more varied than before.
The Norwegian school system's overarching goal of reducing social differences is largely related to reducing the effects of pupils' background on school performance. There are indications, however, that the Norwegian school system struggle to do this well.
We use the subject of pedagogy as an empirical lens to investigate equity oriented teaching practices. The subject of pedagogy has a central position in working with issues of diversity, social justice and emotional support in teacher education. Thus focusing on the subject of pedagogy can bring valuable insights into how equity is conceptualized and operationalized in teacher education.
Objectives
• To deepen the understanding of how equity is conceptualized in the content and instructional practices of the subject of pedagogy
• To contribute to the conceptualization and operationalization of the term teaching for equity in teacher education.
• To develop a research and development instrument to measure teaching for equity
• To clarify the relationship between coursework and fieldwork in teacher education
• To build a knowledge base of strong teacher education and provide empirical data to directly inform research, policy and practice
Sub-projects
A PhD project starting in the second half of 2023 will contribute to knowledge on the above-mentioned fist two research aims.
