Valgarður's research is in the field of social science education, with focus on quality of teaching. Specifically, his research focuses on teachers’ instructional quality in the social sciences and how technology can improve student outcome.
Valgarður completed master thesis in History didactics at the University Akureyri in 2016. The thesis focused on the development of critical thinking skills in history education, building largely on the works of John Dewey. Between 2007 and 2019 Valgarður worked full-time as a teacher of the humanities and social sciences at the secondary school level.
QUINT PhD-project, “Scaffolding in the modern classroom: Improving Instructional quality through Technology.”, a comparative study of teachers’ instructional practices in Iceland and other Nordic countries as a part of quality of teaching.
