Jóhann Örn Sigurjónsson

Academic Interests

Sigurjónsson’s main field of study is mathematics education. Research interests are mathematics learning materials, cognitive activation and the development of mathematics teaching.

Background

Sigurjónsson has worked as a teacher since 2013. He has B.Ed. and M.Ed. degrees in mathematics teaching and a B.Sc. degree in computational science from the University of Iceland. He has worked as a mathematics teacher in lower secondary school and as assistant teacher at the University of Iceland. Sigurjónsson took part in an International Master’s Programme in Educational Research at the University of Gothenburg.

PhD Dissertation 

The impact of quality in teaching on student engagement in mathematics in Iceland. Quality of Icelandic mathematics teaching compared with other Nordic countries. The effect of different mathematical tasks of high cognitive demand on student learning among the Nordic countries. Assessment of mathematics teaching quality advancement as a result from video-based innovative practice.
