SamPraks - Togheter in Practice

Students discussing.

UiO's joint course for interprofessional education and collaborative practice, where students learn with each other, about each other and through each other.

Theory and practice

Through SamPraks, students are put in engaging practice-based clinical situations with a patient or client with complex needs, as a part of an interprofessional team. Starting out in 2016, students were put into clinical placements at care homes, in interprofessional teams of 6, with one student from each profession. Since then, more learning arenas have been added, including hospital placements, simulated clinical appointments with actors, and digital clinical scenarios.

Through interprofessional collaboration, the group evaluates the patient’s condition and propose interventions to improve their quality of life. This is always done by centring the patient's needs, while incorporating the students' own reflections as well feedback from staff members.

This approach follows from our philosophy. All participants must start with a solid grasp of their own profession, so that they are able to meaningfully contribute to the group task. From that point, they must learn how to listen, collaborate and learn from each across the professional divide.

Structure

The SamPraks model consists of 4 components

1. Introductory digital learning course

To learn about the principles of interprofessional collaboration while learning about the competencies and skills of other professions.

2. Launch meeting

Information is shared about SamPraks and course, before breaking the students out into their assigned interprofessional groups. This is to give them an opportunity to start to know each other, discuss what “interprofessional education and collaborate practice” entails and finally make a plan for their task.

3. Interprofessional groupwork in different learning arenas

The learning arenas acts as the launching point for group discussion and reflection on how to approach and manage interlocking situations through inteprofessional education

a. Clinical placements in affiliated hospitals and care homes

b. Simulated placements, with actors as a care home patient or a youth (or their relative).

c. Digital learning based on two scenarios, both with a patient with complex needs.

4. Co-writing and presentation of report

Having completed the practice, the group co-write and present their interprofessional group evaluation based on their patient/client/scenario, including their proposed interventions.
