Theory driven RCTs and QEDs have, I argue, substantially advanced our understanding of ‘what works’ to aid reading acquisition improvement, and sometimes why and for whom such interventions work. I review some of this literature with a focus on the work of our lab, before considering what we might need to do to advance this field, and how we might now need both to augment RCT / QED designs and our conceptions of modelling literacy, and perhaps also, other scaled educational change in school systems.
