CREATE Open Seminar - Schools and Mental Health: Impacts of a Nationwide School Reform in Norway on Adolescent Depression, Life Satisfaction, and Mental Health Service Encounters

This seminar will be held by Siri Hausland Folstad. In this talk, she will present research from her PhD on how a nationwide Norwegian school reform is associated with adolescents’ mental health and wellbeing. Using linked registry and survey data, the seminar explores how changes in school curricula and subject guidelines may relate to depression, life satisfaction, and use of mental health services among students.

Siri Hausland Folstad will present her PhD work on how a Norwegian school reform was associated with adolescents’ mental health and wellbeing. Using patient register and UngData surveys linked to schools, she examines whether updated learning materials and subject guidelines were related to changes in mental health service use, depressive symptoms, and life satisfaction, and whether these associations differed across school contexts. Her findings indicates that the reform effect could vary over schools, and may have been especially beneficial in school environments where students were at higher risk.
