How do some students manage to succeed in school despite facing serious disadvantages? This inaugural lecture explores the phenomenon of academic resilience, focusing on socioeconomically disadvantaged students who succeed against the odds. Drawing on international research together with insights from my own projects, the lecture highlights how resources at home, in the classroom, and at school, can help students thrive. The lecture combines research evidence with personal reflections, illustrating both the challenges and the possibilities for creating more equitable education systems.
