Social development is one of the most critical developmental areas for human beings. Deficits in social skills may negatively impact several essential domains including academic achievement, interpersonal relationships, behavior, mental health, and adult life outcome. Individuals with autism present with core deficits in social skills. Without supports and effective interventions to enhance social skills, children with autism often struggle to obtain social competence, and may experience challenges in the school, home, and community settings. With effective interventions, children with autism can learn essential social skills that can help to mitigate deficits and strengthen social competence. After a brief review of various theories of social development, this article seeks to present the constructs of social competence, social skills, and adaptive skills in relatable and clear language for educators. Finally, the article will review several evidence-based interventions designed to enhance social skills.

Abstract In recent years, there has been a considerable rise in prevalence rates for autism/autism spectrum disorders (ASD) around the globe. Understanding the patterns of prevalence is essential for policy development at national and local levels that effectively plans for medical, psychological, behavior analytical, and educational interventions. This study presents new data on the prevalence of ASD among preschool and school-age children (ages 1–16 years) in Norway. Based on the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) criteria for diagnosis, the rate of ASD increased from 2014 to 2016. The study found a much higher increase in prevalence rate among preschool-age (1–5 years) children than school-age (6–16 years) children over the same 2-year period. At the same time, however, the rate of ASD among school-age children (6–16) compared with that among preschool children (1–5) is higher in 2014 and 2016, indicating a school-age effect. The results also indicate a shifting pattern of gender difference in diagnosed preschool-age children. The male-to-female ratio receiving an ASD diagnosis has increased from 4.46:1 in 2014 to 4.57:1 in 2016, suggesting that the gender gap may be slightly widening for preschool children. For school-age children, the gender gap (male-to-female ratio) is slightly narrowing, moving from 3.53:1 in 2014 to 3.46:1 in 2016. While these changes may not seem significant, the implications of the full findings are discussed.

The aim of this paper is to present a historical and conceptual analysis of observations of a recent innovative approach to training of vocational education teachers in Norway. Since the 17th century, there has been a close link between industrialisation and vocational training in Norway. Consequently, there has been a similar relationship between vocational training (VT) and the training of vocational education teachers (VETs). The close relationship became more apparent during the collapse of Norway´s oil industry in 2015. An increasing number of technically skilled people with higher education lost their jobs. To avert the negative impact of the breakdown, the government requested University of Agder to develop a course designed to retrain unemployed technically skilled workers with higher education to become teachers at vocational schools. In this paper we present and discuss several aspects of the untraditional approach to vocational teacher training. A particular emphasis is given to the educational thoughts that gave birth to a new way of thinking about constructing and developing a transformative vocational teacher training program for untraditional target group. A brief historical account for development of VTCC in Norway is also presented to provide the readers some important information about the Norwegian context

During the last couple of decades, immigration, family reunification, and refugees have brought about increased demographic
diversity in many western countries. In kindergartens and schools, minority students with different indigenous, ethnic, linguistic,
and cultural backgrounds are given their education side by side with students of a majority cultural background. Yet, these
students may have different socio-economic backgrounds, experiences, sexual orientations, and special education needs. Though
it can be challenging, it is the duty of the educational system—with its psychological service institutions, its schools, and its
educators—to meet such diversity with recognition, appreciation, and cultural sensitivity and to provide adapted and appropriate
special needs education for eligible children. This article illuminates the importance of multicultural counseling competence
among school psychologists. We mainly address issues where school psychologists and cultural and linguistic minorities are
involved. We present and discuss critical approaches that are relevant for school leaders, teachers, special education teachers,
occupational therapists, family therapists, behavioral analysts, health care professionals, child welfare workers, and paraprofessionals
working in educational institutions in many countries. The examples and cases we present are from our own country of
Norway.

The prevalence of autism/autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has been increasing across the world. Previous studies in Norway reported, that the prevalence rate for 0-10-year-old children is 1 in 166, and in the case of 11-year-old children it is 1 in 125. Moreover, another nationwide study discovered, that 1 in 192 males and 1 in 695 females between the age of 1-16 years had autism in Norway in the year 2016. This study is underpinned by the data from the National Patient Registry (NPR) for registered incidences of autism/ASD (ICD-10: F84.0 Childhood autism and F84.5 Asperger syndrome). The results show that the prevalence rates of autism/ASD in the capital city of Oslo increased from 2012 to 2016 and the number of children with autism/ASD doubled during this period. Furthermore, in 2016 the results revealed that that 1 in 349 males and 1 in 1594 females between the age of 1-5 years old had Autism/ASD. Similarly, among the age group of 6-16 years, 1 among 157 males and 1 among 544 females had autism/ASD in the capital city of Oslo in 2016. These findings suggest a ‘school-age-effect’ in the increase of prevalence rates among the school-age children compared to the preschool-age children. In the following study, the results are presented and discussed along with some suggestions for the educational and healthcare authorities.

Abstract
A collective Competence Improvement Project (CIP) was conducted for educational psychological counselors (n=5) along with teachers (n=11), special education teachers (n=7), and child and youth workers (n=11). All of the participants were involved in the training and teaching of children with autism/ASD in a small municipality in Norway. The CIP focused primarily on competence improvement in the participants’ overall knowledge and theoretical conceptions about autism/ASD. Additionally, other goals included competence improvement in Discrete Trial Teaching (DTT), Pivotal Response Training (PRT), and Social Stories™ (SS). The results demonstrate that the CIP contributed to improvements in some of these targeted areas but not in all. Educational psychological counsellors and special education teachers benefited more and satisfactorily from the CIP than teachers and child and youth workers (CYWs). It is now clear that achieving significant improvement in competency does not necessarily equate to satisfactory improvement. Additionally, improving the professionals’ theoretical knowledge is important, but it does not necessary lead to improving their operational knowledge--their capacity for implementing their knowledge in practice. This paper presents the background, implementation, and results of the CIP, and it closes with a discussion of the findings and conclusions about their implications for future CIPs and research.

Video modeling is one of the recognized methods used in the training and teaching of children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). The model’s theoretical base stems from Albert Bandura's (1977; 1986) social learning theory in which he asserts that children can learn many skills and behaviors observationally through modeling. One can assume that by observing others, a child with ASD can construct an idea of how new behaviors are performed, and on later occasions this mentally and visually constructed information will serve as a guide for his/her way of behaving. There are two types of methods for model learning: 1) In Vivo Modeling and 2) Video Modeling. These can be used a) to teach children with ASD skills that are not yet in their behavioral repertoire and / or b) to improve the children's emerging behaviors or skills. In the case of linguistic minority children at any stage of their bilingual development, it has been presumed that some of their behaviors that can be interpreted as attitude or culture-related actions. This approach, however, can sometimes delay referral, diagnosis, and intervention. In our project, we used Video Modeling and positive targeted results with regard to teaching social communication skills and target behavior to an eleven year-old bilingual boy with ASD. Our study also reveals that through Video Modeling, children with ASD can learn desirable behavioral skills as by-products. Video Modeling can also contribute positively to the social inclusion of bilingual children with ASD in school settings. In other words, bilingual children with ASD can transfer the social communication skills and targeted behaviors they learn through second-language at school to a first-language milieu.

Voices that matter – who are the Sámi teachers in compulsory education?

Show summary
The Truth and Reconciliation Commission's report pointed out that the school and the role of the teacher were central to the Norwegianization policy carried out in Norway. The policy led to language loss and missed schooling for Sámi pupils. The school is now an arena for language revitalization measures. In this presentation, we will report findings from a survey with Sámi-teachers in compulsory education.
The survey includes 123 Sámi speaking teachers in place-based education. The survey centers around the teachers' backgrounds and experiences answering the question What characterizes Sámi-teachers teaching by the Sámi curriculum? We will shed light on several aspects of their background, the pupil base they meet and where they teach.
The results of the survey show that Sámi-teachers have teaching competence in the subjects they teach. A significant proportion of Sami teachers also have further education in at least one subject, which is quite similar to the situation for Norwegian schools. The gender distribution is also quite similar to the situation for Norwegian schools. The analyses show that most teachers have either short (1-5 years) or long experience (21 years or more).
If we assume that 1) the most experienced teachers will retire within the next 15 years, 2) that the current number of students is stable and 3) that all teachers will have teaching competence, it is reasonable to estimate that we will need at least around 15 new teachers each year in the future. In order to succeed with language revitalization measures in schools, it is crucial to recruit and retain qualified teachers in primary and secondary schools and ensure that they have good working conditions as educators. If educational goals are to be met, it is also necessary to ensure relevant education that caters for the ever-growing group of pupils who learn Sámi as a second language. This is specifically important if second language education is to be successful as a language revitalization measure.
