PhD project:

Opportunities to talk: A comparative approach to students' use of languages during English and French lessons in lower secondary school in England, France and Norway.

The main aim of this PhD project is to identify what characterises student talk in English and French classes in England, France and Norway and to identify promising practices.

The opportunity to talk and develop language proficiency is important at all stages of learning and in supporting academic development. In this international video study, I investigate the quantity and quality of student talk in English and French lessons in England, France and Norway. More specifically, I identify how much time is devoted to student talk during English and French lessons and the opportunities students have to interact and engage in classroom discourse. I analyse the instructional situations when students have the opportunity to talk: e.g. the topic and activity, what  they talk about, what kind of register they use, whether they use whole utterances or single words, etc.?

Some questions of interest are: Is there a relation between students' opportunities to talk in the classroom, and their results in proficiency tests? What similarities or differences in classroom talk can be identified across languages and contexts? To what extent is student talk defined by classroom activities, independently of language or context?

As a part of the NRC funded LANGUAGES project, this mixed methods study draws on an extensive dataset, including video, survey and test data from 92 English and French classrooms in lower secondary schools in England, France and Norway.
