NordLead is a collaborative research network that brings together scholars from the Nordic countries and Greenland to deepen understanding of how Nordic and Arctic school leaders promote democracy, equity and learning across diverse educational landscapes. At times when global developments, increasing complexity and shifting national priorities shape the work of local schools, the network seeks to develop new comparative insights into school leadership in these regions.
About the project
NordLead investigates the conditions, practices and professional identities of school principals working within democratic welfare states. While the Nordic countries -Denmark, Iceland, Finland, Norway and Sweden, as well as Greenland - share many cultural, historical, societal features and geographical features, they also display significant differences at macro, meso and micro levels, including governance models, policy traditions and expectations placed on school leaders. These similarities and variations create valuable opportunities to explore how leaders navigate their responsibilities, interpret policy and support the development of welleducated and socially responsible citizens.
The Network examines schools as public institutions entrusted with societal functions and democratic responsibilities. This includes studying how state policy shapes or constrains school autonomy, how leaders act as sense-makers within increasingly globalized and shifting socio-economic context, and how they respond to new demands related to inclusion, crisis management, trust, accountability and professional culture.
Drawing on a range of theoretical perspectives and research traditions in educational leadership and policy, NordLead aims to strengthen comparative knowledge about leadership practices, governance structures and the moral and social purposes of schooling across the Nordic region and Greenland.
