Welcome to the STAGE English Teacher Day! We will present results from a 4-year research project in which more than 900 students from 1st grade, 6th grade, and 10th grade participated. We have examined their use of English outside school through various activities, such as listening to music, using social media, and playing video games.
Programme
09.00–09.30: Coffee/tea and sandwich
09.30 –11.45: Focus: Primary school
11.45–12.45: Lunch
12.45–15.00: Focus: Secondary school
How much time do they spend on these out-of-school, extramural English activities? What do they choose to do in English, and why? What do they learn? We have also measured their English vocabulary knowledge, reading comprehension, and speaking proficiency. How many English words do students in grades 1, 6, and 10 know? Are they good at reading? How well do they speak and interact in English?
We have compared the results for Norwegian students who have had English lessons in school since 1st grade with Flemish students from Belgia, who start with English lessons very late, not until 7th or 8th grade. An important question is whether Norwegian students benefit from their early start of English in school and, if so, in what ways?
Practical tips for English teachers
In addition to presenting brand new research findings and important didactical principles for teaching English, we plan to share some advice on how teachers in their own classrooms can approach students with different proficiency levels, different learner profiles, and different uses of English outside school.
