Using Talkwall in lectures with many students

With many students in large lectures, it can be challenging to initiate plenary discussions. Talkwall can help students get started.

Anyone who has taught knows that the same students often feel confident enough to speak up in class. Speaking up to ask a question in a large lecture can feel even more intimidating. Writing short contributions can be an alternative.

Talkwall is a simple and flexible tool that provides multiple opportunities to foster participation in teaching large groups of students. Students can post their contributions using their phone or computer. The teacher can choose to display these questions on the board and use them as a starting point for explanations. The idea is to offer participants more ways to ask questions, express their thoughts, and engage.

Another option could be to create tasks where students sort and discuss content prepared by the instructor. The possibilities here are many. Sorting tasks can be a great way for students to start a conversation among themselves and foster participation in a shared activity.
