Prof. Charalambos (Haris) Themistocleousis a full Professor of Speech, Language, and Communication at theUniversity of Oslo. His research investigates the neurobiological and computational foundations of human language and cognition, focusing on how subtle acoustic, prosodic, morphosyntactic, and semantic patterns in natural communication can be decoded to assess and monitor brain health.
Bridging clinical neurolinguistics, experimental phonetics, neuroimaging, and artificial intelligence, Prof. Themistocleous pioneersexplainable, transdiagnostic digital language biomarkersfor the early detection, differential subtyping, prognosis, and treatment-efficacy evaluation of neurodegenerative and neurodevelopmental conditions—includingPrimary Progressive Aphasia (PPA), Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), Alzheimer’s disease (AD),stroke-induced aphasia,Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and Developmental Language Disorder (DLD).
Prior to joining the University of Oslo faculty, he conducted postdoctoral research in computational neurolinguistics at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine(Department of Neurology, 2018–2022), computational linguistics at theUniversity of Gothenburg(Centre for Linguistic Theory and Studies in Probability – CLASP, 2015–2017), and as a Visiting Research Scholar atPrinceton University(2015). He is the founder and lead architect of Open Brain AI, an open-access multilingual computational platform automating clinical speech, language, and discourse analysis across 15+ languages for researchers, clinicians, and educators across Europe and North America.
