What is a doctoral research fellowship?
As a doctoral research fellow, you are employed in an academic position on a temporary contract at one of the Faculty’s departments or centres for the purpose of completing a PhD. Guidelines concerning appointment to post-doctoral and research posts at UiO will then apply to you.
You will either be appointed for three years with a 100% focus on the organized research training or for four years with 25% required duties at your department. Doctoral research fellowships at the faculty are usually advertised for a term of four years.
Am I qualified to apply?
The criteria are set out in the advertisements.
You are normally qualified with:
- Norwegian higher education of at least five years within a relevant field - usually a 3-year Bachelor's Degree and a 2-year Master's Degree. The Master's Degree normally includes a thesis of at least 30 credits
- Foreign completed degree within a relevant field (master's level) equivalent to a Norwegian 2-year master's degree.
- a Master’s degree with a grade of A or B
- Courses at master's level must have an average grade of B or better
- The average grade of the bachelor's must be C or better
- For 5-year studies, the average grade must be B or better
Applicants who have not completed a master's degree may only apply if the advertisement allows for this. Any appointment is made after completion of the master's degree.
English Language qualifications
International applicants are required to have a good command in English for attending the PhD programme. An applicant must document proficiency in English by taking an internationally recognised test. The requirements are the same as for admission to master's degree programmes.
If you are recommended for the position, the Faculty will ask you to submit original documentation of your previous education and/or ask you to secure that your examination institution sends us copies of the necessary documents directly to the Faculty.
For a complete description of requirements go to Supplementary rules for Ph.D.
What should my project description contain?
The quality of the project description is a central assessment criterion when considering applicants.

Admission agreement
Admission to the PhD programme is formalized in an admission agreement (docx) (part B of the document). The agreement is meant to clarify responsibilities, rights and obligations, and is signed by the candidate, supervisors, Faculty and Department.
