About the project

This project focuses on what is commonly known as “thinking classrooms”, based on national and international research on inquiry activities in mathematics teaching. Thinking classrooms pertain to mathematics teaching where the students work in groups with problem solving and inquiry on vertical surfaces.

As such, our aim is to study this phenomenon, and we collect video data from classrooms utilizing such teaching, artefacts, as well as interviews and surveys with teachers and students. Based on these data we aim to better understand the enacted teaching in these classrooms, as well as teachers’ and students’ perceptions and experiences with this method.

Bakground

Mathematics teaching aligned with "thinking classrooms" has recently become more prominent in Norwegian and international classrooms. Despite this, few studies have focused on teaching utilizing vertical surfaces, suggesting a need for both deeper and broader insights from research on classrooms applying this approach to mathematics teaching.
