About the Project
VOSEAMS is about using museums as an entry point to learn about sustainable development in vocational education. By combining vocational didactics, museum pedagogy, and sustainability didactics, we aim to co-create knowledge about vocational students' aesthetic experiences. We will explore how these experiences can be used to develop new empirical knowledge and a model for how museums can support vocational-oriented sustainability education across both museums and classrooms.
Background
Sustainable development is particularly relevant for vocational program students. Many services, materials, and products used in vocational fields impact climate, the environment, health, and social conditions. So far, there has been little research on sustainability didactics aimed at vocational students. Furthermore, there has been little research on how museums can be relevant for vocational students and how teachers can follow up on students' museum experiences in subsequent classroom instruction.
Aims
- Identifying how museums can prioritize their strengths and facilitate studentsʼ aesthetic experiences that are important for the transition to a more sustainable society
- Developing ways for how learning activities can extend the museum experience in the classroom, that support continuity between museum and classroom contexts (from a student perspective)
- Proposing a model of the extended museum visit informing how museums can support sustainability education for vocational students in particular across museum and classroom context
- Concretizing how students understand sustainability in their future occupation, and how it is situated in the society the occupation is part of, which they may bring into their professional practice
- Contributing to strengthening the status of vocational education in both sustainability and museum education research
