Mediation of Digital Media and Psychological Needs in Adolescence: The Role of Adolescent Autonomy and Family Communication (PhD project)

This project investigates the role parental mediation of digital media (e.g. social media) plays in fostering adolescence psychological needs. During adolescence, autonomy is a crucial need, fostering motivation and a sense of ownership of one’s actions. With digital media becoming a major contributor to how adolescents enact their own autonomy, it is important to investigate the role played by parental mediation (e.g. rule-setting and autonomy support) and adolescent-parent communication play in fulfilling adolescent psychological needs, alongside how these can contribute to close and fulfilling relationships between adolescents and their parents. This project is based on survey data collected from more than 700 adolescents and 300 parents in Norway.

Academic interests

  • How parents and adolescents negotiate the boundaries for adolescents' use of digital medias at home, and how this might affect adolescents' feelings of autonomy, competence and relatedness.
  • How education affects students' self-determination and motivation for learning.
  • Consequences of growing up in a digital age and how this affects young peoples' motivation to learn.
  • The effect of active learning, and changes in psychological variables in colloquium groups (learning communities) with and without guidance
