Academic interests
Hi! I am a Professor in workplace studies at the Department of Education (iPed). My background is in social anthropology (UiO, 2000) with a PhD in strategic management (BI Business School, 2015). My research interest span the triangle people, work, and technology. Some key topics are digitalization, innovation, AI, technology, algorithms, platformization, work, collaboration, learning, actors and non-actors.
Digitalization have remained a central theme in my research since my PhD, encompassing the digitalization of public services, the extent to which mass collaboration logics in co-creation services (e.g., Wikipedia) are transferable to workplaces, the emergence of new digital workplaces such as sharing platforms and platform companies, and the extent to which artificial intelligence can outperform complex knowledge work.
At iPed, I am affiliated with the research group KITE https://www.uv.uio.no/english/research/groups/kite/index.html , which conducts research on AI in working life and higher education. I am also affiliated with The Norwegian Research Centre for Trustworthy AI (TRUST) https://www.trust-aicentre.no/english/ I am the coordinator for the master's KULA program at the Department, I teach various courses and seminars, and I supervise master’s students who write about a range of work-life-relevant issues related to organizations, work, technology, leadership, organizational development, learning, collaboration, etc.
I have an on-going project where I explore the practices of data-work and data-workers in a Norwegian platform company where I have done ethnographic fieldwork to understand how data-work is done in practice, as well as organisational challenges at play in efforts of making data “valuable.” Another ongoing research project in which I lead is DigiLove, where a number of different aspects related to dating applications are examined. Together with Anders Nilsen from Kristiania, I am also involved in the research project Adumbration, which deals with self-understanding, representation and photography.
Prior to my academic career, I worked ten years in the public sector (Statped) as a communication advisor, as well as a consultant in the IT industry (Bouvet ASA). In 2010, I embarked on a PhD project on social software and innovation in organizations (NetWorked Power), hosted by SINTEF with BI Business School as an educational partner. My research explored a social enterprise platform, knowledge professionals and working practices in a multinational company.
