User Interactions with Historic Photographs on Facebook

Background

Oslo Bymuseet is participating in a research project about how people interact with old photos on social media. The aim of the study is to document and describe user activity online with material from museums, and specifically to examine how people interact with a Facebook page displaying historical photographs. This research will help cultural policy makers and museum professionals understand what happens when museum collections are made available online and has implications for cultural policy such as approaches to the digitization and dissemination of museum collections.

The study is being conducted by PhD fellow, Emily Oswald as a part of the Cultural Heritage Mediascapes research project. The project is funded by the Research Council of Norway.

What information has been collected?

The study focuses on user activities including likes, shares, and comments on historic photographs published on the Bymuseet Facebook page. Collected data includes information such as the names of individuals who liked or shared these photographs, the content of comments and the names of users who posted them, and the time when a user liked, commented on, or shared a post.

This study only includes posts, comments, likes, and shares published to the Bymuseet Facebook page during the period 1 Oct 2013–30 Sept 2016.

How will the information be used?

This publicly available information has been downloaded from the Facebook Graph API and saved to a secure server at the University of Oslo.

This information will be analyzed by researcher Emily Oswald, and results of the study will be published in an academic journal or book chapter. While the identities of individuals will be used in the analysis, no names will be published. Quotations from comments may be selected for publication; these individuals will receive additional notification about how their data will be used.

When the study is completed, all information will be anonymized.

Is my information included in the study?
