The "Dialogue Frame" and Speech-to-Text Technology: Bridging conversation and writing (PhD Project)

Duration
01.02.2024–01.02.2028

In this project, we are investigating speech-to-text-technology in combination with a "dialogue frame" as an integrated part of a process-oriented writing sequence.

AI generated, DALL E-3. Prompt: An artistic image of a person seen in profile, dictating text through speech, rendered in the combined style of drypoint etching, Art Deco, and steampunk aesthetics. The image features a rough texture characteristic of drypoint engraving. The person's hair and facial features are integrated with mechanical gears and cogs, symbolizing a fusion of human thought and machinery, while the Art Deco style adds geometric shapes, symmetry, and stylized details. Elements of steampunk are incorporated, such as vintage machinery, and Victorian-inspired details. Surrounding the face are flowing streams of text, pencils, and light bulbs, symbolizing creativity and art. The entire image combines the detailed, textured appearance of drypoint engraving with the elegant, decorative elements of Art Deco and the industrial, mechanical vibe of steampunk

Contact

The dialogue frame is an innovative, pedagogical support tool, inspired by the well known writing frame. The use of the dialogue frame and speech-to-text technology challenges traditional boundaries between written and oral expression. The project investigates whether the dialogue frame can function as a bridge and support in the demanding process of transferring thought and conversational content into individual, structurally written text in a non-narrative genre. The project is a classroom study conducted in three 8th grade classes.

Background

Many students demonstrate creativity, knowledge, and reflection in conversational contexts. At the same time, students may struggle to formulate their meaningful content comprehensibly and structurally in a written text. Improved speech recognition technology makes it possible to investigate this technology's didactic potential in developing students' oral and written skills.
