Join our research in special needs education!

We invite you to participate in the Voluntary Register of Oslo SPeLL (Special Education and Learning Lab)! You will then be provided with information about studies that may be relevant for you or the children under your care. We are seeking both children and adults with developmental difficulties (e.g. dyslexia), acquired difficulties (e.g. aphasia) and no difficulties.

The aim of our studies is to be able to offer better assessment and treatment of various developmental and acquired difficulties. We would like participation in our studies to be a fun and educational experience! Participants will receive financial compensation for their travel expenses and the children will receive small prizes for taking part.

Our research includes:

  • Reading and writing skills
  • Language skills
  • Mathematical knowledge
  • Communication difficulties
  • Developmental difficulties

Some of our methods:

  • Tasks involving words, numbers and shapes
  • PC tasks
  • Chats
  • Questionnaires
  • Brain activity measurements (EEG)
  • Measuring the point of gaze on a screen (eye tracking)

Who can participate?

Age: 0 to 100 years

People without special difficulties

People with:

  • Language difficulties
  • Communication difficulties (hearing-related, acquired, developmental)

Background for the Registry

Those of us who have set up and who are running the Register work at the Oslo Special Needs Education and Learning Lab at the Department of Special Needs Education, Faculty of Educational Sciences, University of OsloOur work involves supporting researchers and students with mapping tools, technical equipment and clinical facilities. The people who use the lab are permanent employees at the UiO, PhD candidates and students.

Our researchers need voluntary participants for their projects. We have therefore created an electronic register of people who are interested in participating in future research projects. By registering yourself or children under your care you will be contributing towards world-class research at the UiO! You can withdraw from the Register at any time (Withdraw from the Register).

Who can participate?

We mainly require children of kindergarten and school age to participate, but also adults. We are particularly interested in the participation of people with developmental and acquired difficulties, so that we can increase our knowledge about such difficulties.

We also need children and adults without developmental or acquired difficulties. This is important so that we can make comparisons with other groups and because many projects do not focus on development.

Useful info when registering

Before registration

During registration

  • Enter contact and health info for yourself or children in your care
  • Read through the consent form
  • Digitally sign the consent form (requires MinID) for yourself or children in your care

After registration

  • Receive offers and information about different research projects
  • Say yes or no to participating
  • You can withdraw from this Register at any time

Why sign up?

  • Learn more about different difficulties
  • Help researchers to find out more about treatment and the causes of such difficulties
  • Experience something exciting, educational and fun
  • Meet interesting, talented people

How do the research projects take place?

Researchers use different methods and techniques in their projects. Examples of these may include:

  • Reading a text and answering some questions
  • Using computer software for clicking on different images
  • Performing mathematical tasks

During such tests scientists can measure the following:

  • Brain activity (EEG)
  • Measuring the point of gaze on a screen (eye tracking)
