In combination with the PLATO training this fall, QUINT Centre Director Professor Kirsti Klette and QUINT Postdoctoral Fellow Mark White are conducting a brief study to understand how raters score and whether PLATO training affects this process.  Before PLATO training, raters will observe videos of teachers, taking extensive notes and providing scores on the PLATO dimensions based on their professional views of effective instruction.

After PLATO training, raters will watch and score the same videos using PLATO, while engaging in a semi-structured cognitive interview procedure.  Pre-training scoring should reflect Norwegian norms around instructional quality while post-training scoring will reflect PLATO-based views of instructional quality.

Using qualitative and quantitative methods, the following questions will be explored:

  1. Does PLATO training change the scores that raters assign to videos? If so, does scoring become more aligned to PLATO master scores or better differentiate teachers whose students have hi/low test scores gains?
  2. Do raters identify and/or categorize specific observable behaviors in different ways before and after training?
  3. How do raters think about and feel about differences in assigned scores?
