About the project

This PhD project emerged as a part of the research project STAGE. The aim is to explore the relationship between students' use of English in their free time (extramural English) and their English proficiency, and with that, contribute to the research field of second language research.

The project particularly focuses on students who play video games in English and read English fiction as a form of escapism. Escapism refers to the tendency of temporarily escaping from reality and everyday life. At an international level the project examines both Norwegian and Belgian students (1st – 10th grade).

Background

This project employs a mixed methods design and a sociocultural theoretical framework. The project began fall 2022 and is planned to end in 2026.
