Dr. Jim Slotta and his team from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE, Toronto, Canada) has been visiting the MIRACLE team at InterMedia. Dr. Slotta was accompanied by Colin McCann, Matt Zukowski, Gabby Dullah and Rafael Pascual-Leone. Dr. Slotta is an Associate Professor with the Department for curriculum, Teaching, and Learning and the Centre for Science, Mathematics, and Technology Education at OISE. His research employs technology-enhanced learning environments to investigate cognitive models of learning and instruction. He's developing a new pedagogical model called "Knowledge Community and Inquiry" (KCI), where students in a classroom work together to create a persistent knowledge resource, which then serves as a source of materials and inspiration to subsequent inquiry projects. He is currently principal investigator at the "Technology enhanced activities and interactions in the science classroom: pedagogical scripts for knowledge communities" project.
In relation to MIRACLE, Jim and his team are collaborating in part of the design work. In this occasion, they have been here to help us lay the foundations of the MIRACLE's "Science Hub", based on the technology they use to do their classroom experiments in Toronto. We are currently building the Science Hub video-wall (and application for sharing video content) using their Agent technology and user portal. Further development of the Science Hub will involve designing a social layer to add on that application.
In addition, during this visit, a plan for future collaboration in terms of design, research and co-writting, has been laid down.
