Content Description
As all international large-scale assessments, the International Computer and Information Literacy Study (ICILS) goes describes in great detail what students at different competence levels know and are able to do. In this presentation, the ICILS proficiency scale is presented. Less than one fourth of the students in all countries have competences at the highest proficiency levels 3 or 4. At level 3, students demonstrate awareness that the information they access can be biased, inaccurate, or unreliable, and students working at level 4 furthermore demonstrate awareness of the potential for information to be a commercial and malleable commodity. In this talk, it is discussed what the consequences may be of very large groups of students not being able to recognize even simple attempts to trick or manipulate them.
