This talk explores how socioeconomic status (SES) continues to shape students’ digital competence, drawing on PISA 2022 data from over 390,000 students in 52 countries. Using a meta-analytical approach, we found consistent positive links between SES, digital self-efficacy, and online information practices across diverse education systems. However, our results show that high-quality digital media use can reduce this association, especially through inquiry-based learning with digital media. These findings highlight the potential of pedagogical strategies to mitigate digital inequalities and inform targeted interventions to bridge the second-level digital divide.
