In this interview, we discuss the foundations of Malabou’s thinking as well as several important strains present in the articles of the EPAT special issue "Plasticity and Education" – rationality, materiality, ‘anarchic education’ – and the question of life itself.

If it is the case that education is thought as an institution that promotes justice, two main questions immediately arise: How do we think justice, and can we hope to promote justice in education? By drawing from the philosophy of Catherine Malabou, I first propose a way of thinking justice based on her concept of ‘plasticity’. While related to Jacques Derrida’s concept of justice, Malabou’s involves an orientation towards the material – a semiotic materialism, if you will – that opens up for a different and perhaps more accessible view on the future. Then, I will proceed from the assumption that education is a type of social selection, as it has stratifying effects both ‘vertically’ – age and accumulated merit – and ‘horizontally’ – between peers. Borrowing from Malabou’s study of Althusser and Darwin, I explore the notion of education based on a ‘plastic’ type of selection, mirroring the unexpected and unplanned movements of natural selection. This exploration, performed in the name of justice, might be the basis for a type of educational selection that continually reinvents itself.
