EngageLab is a scientific unit at IPED that support researchers at the Faculty of Education with design, ICT development and evaluation. The unit consists of ICT developers, designers, and researchers.
Design based research
Developers and designers are collaborating with researchers in planning, designing, developing, and conducting ICT based interventions in practices, such as in schools and museums. Interventions range from simple experiments to more advanced evaluations of technology. Participatory methods are often applied.
Gamification and language education
EngageLab supported Caroline Cruaud with interaction design, game design, development and evaluation of a web-based application where students can find tasks, check their team status but also discuss and debate.
The students can access a list of different quests created beforehand by the teacher. Each quest is divided in levels and tasks. They can also access a daily and weekly list of tasks. The tasks will encourage the use of technologies (e.g. video cameras, computers) but also social networks. Each team will have its own blog, used as both an arena for debate and knowledge sharing and as a progress log. The application will also provide a stream of notifications where students and teachers can exchange messages and get informed on new blog posts or achievements.

Citizen participation in urban planning
Co-constructing city futures (3C) address participation in the construction of ideas and visions for city futures. The project was initiated in a sandpit process addressing the green shift by developing projects that lead to radical and bold solutions and concepts for future cities.
EngageLab contribute design, development and exploration of ICT resources that aims to enable planners and citizens to co-construct scenarios for city development.
Large scale interventions
During the last decade, design based research projects have transformed, with a greater focus on interplay with existing infrastructures and learning ecologies, scaled use, and innovation. This implies that activities have longer duration, involve more actors, and that the data collection is more extensive.
Digital, morphology-based vocabulary intervention
EngageLab support Janne von Koss Torkildsen and Siri Steffensen Bratlie with game design, interaction design, development and evaluation of an app that stimulates a morphology based vocabulary. The focus is on primary school children with language minority backgrounds. There is a need to develop and assuring the quality of tools that enhances these students' morphological knowledge, vocabulary, reading and spelling skills, as well as to examine how these best can be used in education. Data is gathered in the app and stored in TSD (an infrastructure for secure storage of research data at the University of Oslo).
Vocabulary learning in children with Down syndrome
EngageLab supports Kari-Anne Bottegaard Næss in the DSL+ project in developing an app consisting of digital picture books and accompanying tasks ment to motivate first grade students with Downs syndrome and their peers to daily lessons with language stimulation.
EngageLab has developed prototypes that is being tested and a pilot that is evaluated in 2018. Content production is facilitated. Use data from the app is harvested and mad accessible for research through TSD (an infrastructure for secure storage of research data at the University of Oslo).
Research driven innovation
Results and prototypes from design based research have potential for further development into methods, strategies, and products for wider use. This may imply that products are verified, assessed for licensing, and further innovation.
Ingvill Rasmussen and Ole Smørdal have developed Samtavla in collaboration with EngageLab. In the DiDiAC project this microblogging tool is integrated with knowledge and experiences from Thinking Together to inquire the value and potential for digital technology to enhance existing and create new forms of classroom dialogues.
Talkwall innovation is a project that furthers Talkwall from a research result to a product. EngageLab verifies the product in collaboration with Inven2, mindful of technical quality, performance, scaled testing, and evaluation, in collaboration with selected schools, NDLA og Uninett.
Visitor observation and analysis
Visitracker is a tool for real time observation and analysis of visitors in a public space. Visitracker is a result of a research collaboration between Palmyre Pierroux, curators at The National Museum and EngageLab. The tool lets observers collect demographic information and make notes about time spent, location, type of interactions e.g. as visitors move through a museum exhibition.

Research data and research infrastructure
EngageLab collaborate with the other labs at the Faculty of Education, ILS/eVIR and ISP/O-AILL, to strengthen our research infrastructures. More emphasis will be put on the ability to support large scale interventions, and all aspects of handling research data.
Hub-node: Video in research
Video-hub is led by ILS and gathers research groups from six faculties (Education, Humanities, Social sciences, Natural sciences, Medicine, and Odontology), and provides a infrastructure for video-based research.
Video-hub develops knowledge about
- ethics and regulations for personal data (GDPR)
- storage solutions and infrastrucures
- solutions for recording audio and video
- tools and methods for analysis
EngageLab is member with a special focus on data harvesting from digital tools and environments, and how such data streams can be integrated into video analysis methods.
Sensitive data in research
EngageLab has experience developing tools that harvest and send data to secure storage at the University of Oslo, and collaborate with TSD about further development of this e-infrastructure.
HuLAR: a hub-node for learning analytics research
HuLAR is lead by Jan Dolonen at EngageLab.
HuLAR gathers groups at IPED and CEMO at the Faculty of Educational Sciences, Center for Computing in Science Education (CCSE), Naturfagsenteret, LINK – Centre for Learning, Innovation & Academic Development, Department of informatics, Department of Musicology, and Digital Services Office.
HuLAR builds knowledge and technology around
- Data Science, faglig og pedagogisk kompetanse for hvordan analysere, fortolke og formidle LA data og resultater i ulike praksiser (forskning, undervisning og ledelse).
- Programmeringskompetanse knyttet til sammenstilling av datakilder, dataformatering, implementasjon av algoritmer for læringsanalyse som presenteres/visualiseres gjennom alert-systemer, dashboards, resultat-eksport, etc.
- Interaksjonsdesign knyttet til presentasjon/visualisering gjennom alert-systemer, dashboards, resultat-eksport, etc.
- IT-administrering av datavarehus med læringsdata, tjenester for læringsanalyse
- Kompetanse om personvern; innsamling og sammenstilling av data fra ulike kilder der persondata inngår, hvordan dette analyseres og brukes i forsknings-, undervisnings-, og administrative sammenhenger.
